Henry Grattan Tyrrell Papers. [ca. 1882]-1929.

The collection consists of notes and typescripts for Tyrrell's industrial engineering works and for his books on bridge design. It also includes family correspondence, personal diaries, scrapbooks and some family photographs. Papers of Tyrrell's youngest son, William Tyrrell, are also included.

Henry Grattan Tyrrell, born in 1867, graduated from the School of Practical Science, University of Toronto, in 1886. He worked on a survey crew in Quebec and Maine for a branch of the CPR between 1886-88. He later gained experience as a civil engineer for a variety of firms in the United States and constructed several notable bridges. In 1915, he set up the Tyrrell Engineering Company in Detroit, and later established offices in New York and Washington. He published a number of books and pamphle...
